What is N-Back?
N-Back is a cognitive training exercise that challenges your working memory. During each round, you're presented with a sequence of stimuli and your task is to identify when the current stimulus matches the one from N steps earlier. When multiple stimuli are active at once, you must track each one independently.
NBacking lets you play directly in your browser with no installation required. Create an account to save your progress, track your improvement over time, and compete with others.
Stimulus Types
Train with one, two, three, or all four modalities simultaneously:
- Spatial - a highlighted square on a 3x3 grid
- Auditory - a spoken sound (Corsica tones, letters, or numbers)
- Color - a color flash on the grid
- Image - a shape drawn on the grid (polygons, tetrominoes, and more)
Single uses one, Dual uses two, Triple uses three, Quad uses all four. Choose your combination in settings.
Advanced Modes
Push beyond standard N-Back with modes that add new dimensions of challenge:
- Interference - near-miss lures replace some trials, forcing sharper discrimination
- Self-Paced - advance trials manually, removing time pressure
- Variable N-Back - the N-level shifts randomly each trial
- Crab-Back - the comparison offset cycles through a descending pattern
All modes can be combined. Each contributes bonus points.
Features

- Fully customizable keyboard and mouse bindings
- Works without JavaScript (progressive enhancement)
Post-Game Results
After each session, two visualizations help you understand your performance:
- Sequence Strip - a color-coded grid showing every trial's outcome for each active modality. Green means you correctly identified a match, orange means you responded when there was no match, red means you missed a match, and grey means you correctly stayed silent. Hover any cell to see the stimulus value and timing.
- Timeline Chart - plots your response time per trial as dots along a horizontal axis. Faster reactions appear closer to the baseline. Use it to spot fatigue, warm-up effects, or inconsistent stretches.
Together these reveal patterns that a single accuracy number cannot: where in the sequence you lost focus, which modality slowed you down, and whether speed or precision was the limiting factor.
Scoring & Leaderboard
Every completed session earns points. Your score determines your rank on the leaderboard and your tier badge.
Points
Points earned per session scale with several factors:
- Accuracy - higher scores across your active modalities earn more
- N-Level - higher N multiplies your gains
- Mode count - more simultaneous modalities (Dual, Tri, Quad) multiply gains
- Speed - faster trial speeds yield more points
- Advanced modes - Interference, Crab-Back, and Variable N-Back each add bonus multipliers
- Streak - consecutive days of play boost your multiplier (capped at 20x)
Poor performance incurs a penalty that reduces your session's net gain. The points calculator lets you estimate earnings before playing.
Tiers
There are 26 tiers (0–25) with Fibonacci-style point thresholds. Your tier badge reflects your total accumulated points. Early tiers are reachable in days; the highest require months of dedicated play.
Streak
Your streak counts consecutive days with at least one completed session. It resets if you go more than 96 hours without playing. A longer streak increases your points multiplier, rewarding consistency over intensity.
Shield & Theft
The leaderboard isn't static. When you score, points are stolen from nearby unshielded players on the same mode leaderboard. This keeps rankings dynamic and rewards active players.
- Shield (🛡️) - you are shielded (protected from theft) if you've played within the last 96 hours. The shield icon appears next to your name on the leaderboard.
- Theft - when you earn points, a portion is redistributed from your vulnerable neighbors. Shielded players cannot be stolen from.
- Friends - your friends are immune to your theft. Adding someone as a friend protects them from losing points to you (and vice versa).
The takeaway: play regularly to stay shielded and climb. Take a long break and nearby players will chip away at your position.
Leaderboard Views
- Global - ranked by total points across all modes
- Per-mode - ranked by points earned in a specific modality combination (e.g., Spatial+Auditory)

Research
Dual N-Back gained attention after studies suggested it may improve fluid intelligence. The evidence is debated, but the task remains one of the most widely studied working memory training paradigms in cognitive science. Explore the research for yourself.
